Longtime BYU women’s gymnastic coach Brad Cattermole announced April 20 that he would retire. Cattermole’s wife, Dawn, who is also an assistant coach, will retire too.
The Cattermoles have coached at BYU since 1987 and have helped lead BYU to eight National Championship tournament appearances and 24 NCAA Regional Tournament appearances.
“It’s been a great 28 years for Dawn and myself. We’ve loved working at BYU and have enjoyed a lot of success,” Brad Cattermole said. “Our staff has been together a long time. Assistant coach Shauna Mertz has been like a daughter to us. It’s been one of the great blessing of my life to go to work every day with my wife Dawn.”
Under the Cattermoles BYU has finished in the top 10 three times and in the top 25 twelve times. In addition, seven Cougar gymnasts earned 17 NCAA All-America awards. Before conference meets were eliminated in 1994, the Cattermoles’ teams were league runners-up five times, and seven athletes earned 10 all-conference honors.
“We want to express our appreciation to Brad and Dawn for their years of dedicated service to BYU and the gymnastics program,” BYU Athletic Director Tom Holmoe said. “They have run a successful program and have had a positive impact in the lives of many student-athletes. We wish them the very best as they begin the next chapter in their life.”
Five U.S. National Team members, six Canadian National Team members and many other Junior Olympic National athletes have all been mentored by the Cattermoles while at BYU.
